From the moment visitors arrive into the outstretched arms of the welcoming figure at Vancouver International Airport, it’s almost impossible to miss experiencing Susan Point’s work.
Over the past decade, Robert Watt has catalogued them in words and photographs. Over hundreds of hours, Point told him about the meaning of the symbols and the ideas behind each of them. Like Point, Watt is also a Canadian treasure. An archivist, museum curator and former citizenship judge, Watt is widely credited with pioneering the use of Indigenous symbols and gender in the ancient art of heraldry and holds the title Rideau Herald Emeritus.
But Della Kew, a museum docent and Musqueam elder, suggested that her cousin, Susan, could help. Soon, they were on their way to Point’s home.
