VICTORIA – The B.C. government is moving privately-run home support services back into health authorities in Metro Vancouver and southern Vancouver Island, largely ending the model of widespread private contracting.
Home care staff help people – mainly seniors – remain independent in their homes for as long as possible by visiting to assist them in getting dressed, preparing meals, bathing, and other services.
“Home support is huge because it allows people to stay at home longer,” said Dix. “It’s important for the system but mostly it’s important for people – really important for people.Dix said the current private model is not integrated fully into his plans to expand team-based care in the overall health care system.
Private operators include both for-profit companies, as well as community organizations and non-profits who assist local seniors. For southern Vancouver Island, the main private provider for 15 years has been Beacon Community Services, a non-profit community organization. For Metro Vancouver, there are four to five organizations that handle the bulk of home support contracts for the region.
“It is indicative that we are seeing a contraction rather than an expansion of our home support services,” she said.
