Sault Ste. Marie firefighters were called to assist in opening a car door after finding a person slumped over the steering wheel, fast asleep. Police suspected the driver was impaired by drugs and arrested him after he refused to comply with a blood screening. Brett Anderson, 28, is charged with refusing to comply with a blood demand.

Sault Ste. Marie firefighters were dispatched to a local intersection Saturday night to pry open a car door — because the person inside was slumped over the steering wheel, fast asleep. Sault Police were the first to respond, arriving at Carmen’s Way and Second Line East at around 6:50 p.m. on March 9. The vehicle was locked, running and in drive, police say. After firefighters managed to open the door, officers developed grounds to believe the driver was impaired by drugs.

“The accused refused to comply with multiple demands for a blood screening,” says a press release issued today by the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service. “They were arrested.” Brett Anderson, 28, is charged with refusing to comply with a blood demand. He was released on an appearance notice and is scheduled back in court on May 6. The allegation has not been tested in court and Anderson is presumed innocent unless proven guilty

Part-time and student employees in Sault Ste. Marie to receive pay increaseSome part-time and student employees at the City of Sault Ste. Marie are expected to get a welcome increase in their buying power next week. The pay increase has nothing to do with cost of living, or city council's decision last month to look for ways to make sure all city workers get competitive compensation. This raise results from a kind of domino effect from October's increase in the minimum wage to $16.55.
