The program was given $300 million for three years.

Transport Minister Marc Garneau attends a news conference in Ottawa on Jan. 15. Garneau says it's"encouraging" to see how many Canadians are willing to buy an electric vehicle.

Ottawa funded the program with $300 million, on a first-come, first-served basis, over the next three years. According to Transport Canada, overall electric vehicle sales jumped 32 per cent after the rebates were launched, compared to the same period the year before. In 2019, electric cars made up three per cent of all vehicle sales, up from two per cent in 2018.

Cara Clairman, CEO of the non-profit electric vehicle advocacy group Plug’n Drive, said a 2017 study by her organization found price to be the main deterrent for consumers when it comes to buying an electric car, so incentives are definitely helpful. She said a program in Ontario to offer $1,000 incentives to buy used electric cars spurred the purchase of more than 300 used electric cars since it launched in April. That program, run by Plug’n Drive with funding from the private M.H.

No, just no. If someone can afford the price of an electric car -- they don't need a subsidy.

Ridiculous that hybrids are included. Yet only the worst of the fully electric vehicles qualify. Consideration should be on pollution and fossil fuel elimination. I don't want my tax dollars going to subsidize vehicles that burn fossil fuels‼ Stop the madness.

Ottawa’s electric-car rebate burns through nearly half its three-year budget in eight monthsCanadians who purchase electric vehicles can receive $5,000 from the federal government Government subsidies raise the cost of these battery operated mobiles. Why should the middle class and lower middle class subsidies these rich green bozos? It's not Ottawa: it's the feckin' Liberals, who couldn't manage a fart after a bean dinner. Stop with the subsidies so rich assholes can virtue signal. Tends to happen when you have to pay people to buy them. We already have ample evidence that without a rebate consumers have little interest in EVs.
