Transport Minister Marc Garneau is considering expanding the government’s $300-million rebate program for people who buy electric vehicles after half the funds were claimed in just eight months.Transport Minister Marc Garneau is thinking about expanding the government’s rebate program for people who buy electric vehicles after eager car-buyers gobbled up nearly half the funds in just eight months.
“It’s very encouraging to see how many people are now thinking about and actually going ahead and buying ,” Garneau said outside the House of Commons Monday afternoon. That is still a long way from the goals the federal Liberals set last year to have electric cars make up 10 per cent of all light-duty vehicle sales by 2025, 30 per cent by 2030 and 100 per cent by 2040. It is a significant part of Canada’s efforts to cut greenhouse gas emissions, with light-duty vehicles emitting 12 per cent of all emissions in Canada in 2017.

Why should tax payers fund the purchase of new luxury vehicles? If you want to save the planet, use transit or buy your own new car.
So...my taxes pay for rich people to buy Tesla’s?
MarcGarneau is still in outer space when it comes to modern transportation policy!
Good, fund the program more then.
It is not a budget expense - those are hardworking middle class taxpayer dollars being given to the rich
That means that they're over budget in the first year by 50%. If I was the accountant in charge I would have cutoff the program until next year's funds came available. I'd sure like to ask that person how this could happen
RobertFife Well that's a good thing - isn't it?
JoanneCangal Saving the planet costs money. Many feel it is worth saving.
RobertFife Subsidizing vehicles made entirely outside of Canada. At the expense of Canadian workers. More ideological driven Liberal governance which will hurt the country. cdnpoli
Its time for an under $20k electric car. Its a clarified golf cart for cripes sake! Forget all the self driving tech and make a Mazda 5 mini van with a decent stereo
Tends to happen when you have to pay people to buy them. We already have ample evidence that without a rebate consumers have little interest in EVs.
It's not Ottawa: it's the feckin' Liberals, who couldn't manage a fart after a bean dinner. Stop with the subsidies so rich assholes can virtue signal.
Government subsidies raise the cost of these battery operated mobiles. Why should the middle class and lower middle class subsidies these rich green bozos?
