A new federal rebate program to encourage Canadians to buy electric cars is proving more popular than expected.

Last Updated Monday, January 27, 2020 5:44PM ESTSHARE

Ottawa funded the program with $300 million, on a first-come, first-served basis, over the next three years. While the government expected the program to be popular, the briefing book prepared for Garneau after he was reinstated as the transport minister after the fall federal election, says "the program has induced more new sales than projected."

Garneau noted his mandate letter from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau instructs him to do more to meet those quotas, and he said looking at doing more with rebates is among the possibilities, including extending them to used cars as well.

Excellent news. The faster we switch the better. Electric (or whatever other clean tech is on the horizon) needs to be 1.

Anyone that uses a gov rebate is a parasite feeding off others.

No surprise when you have to pay people to buy them to begin with We already have ample evidence that without a rebate consumers have little interest in EVs.

I’m glad I’m helping people who can afford to buy new cars buy new cars

Ridiculous waste of money!

Surprise, surprise, surprise. 🙄

Seems so odd that all taxpayers subsidize this purchase, since only the wealthy can afford EVs. Thought the wealthy were supposed to help the middle & lower classes, not the reverse. Care to comment, JustinTrudeau ?

Do charging stations run from solar power or from traditional turbine power plants? Asking for a friend.
