The struggle of Calgary’s downtown is clear to Foy. Her store is surrounded by empty skyscrapers like the Husky and Nexen buildings. She sees other vacant towers being converted into residential and says that type of plan is a good place to start to bring more people to the core, but there is much that needs to be done.
He said this can partially be addressed through the creation of community spaces like halls or recreation facilities where people can meet for a game of pick-up basketball, for example, or gather for other events. The association has started finding ways to bring some of the roughly 9,500 local residents together through meetings and community garage sales.
