Damien Barry, CAO and general counsel for Louisbourg Seafoods Ltd., said the renovation work is expected to be completed by the end of the year giving a new home for some 30 workers, mainly female and from the Philippines. Prior to purchasing for the former funeral home, which closed in 2019, the company had four other properties in Glace Bay that were used for worker accommodations and Barry said such units will now be consolidated into the larger property. With the recent purchase of a new $8 million fishing vessel now assigned to the Glace Bay operation, Barry said the international workers are a complement to long-serving local staff which the company has depended on for years.

At the height of lobster and crab fishing season, as many as 600 people could be working across all its operations. In addition to redfish, lobster, crab, and mussels, the company also processes sea cucumber.
