Van Onselen felt Tame was “ungracious, rude and childish … refusing to smile for the cameras, barely acknowledging [Morrison’s] existence when standing next to him”. So I’m not sure why one Australian of the Year, nearing time on her tenure and determined not to waste her public platform, has different rules of engagement. That all seems pretty arbitrary. This point of view begs a lot of questions: who decides who can be rude and the circumstances in which rudeness is permissible? Who appointed the rude police? Can we appeal their rulings?

Tame’s finale, her Australian of the Year coda, was entirely as you’d expect. This recipient has shown absolutely no interest, at any point, in being transactional about her honour. She doesn’t seem to want a shiny badge in return for a head pat. Having been silenced in the most harrowing of circumstances, this woman wants to speak, on her own terms, and if she gets that opportunity, she will not waste it.I don’t know Grace Tame.

It is rather disappointing to read and hear the criticisms of Grace Tame especially when the democratic majority also suffer to a greater or lesser extent the same scomophobia.

'It feels like progress' Only to the half of the population that were unconditionally on-side with her from the start. Tame advocated well for her cause, but would have reached a wider audience if she'd left polarising culture war skirmishes out of it.

She could have gunned down the PM and his wife and the same people would still be cheering and defending her with nonsense like 'survivors can behave however they want.'

I am sorry I have to correct Katharine Murphy when she says, 'James McGrath (a Liberal senator very few people will have ever heard of outside his home state of Queensland)' Very few Qlders have heard of him either.

Grace Tame started her tenure as AotY 2021 with a powerful speech: 'Well, hear me now, using my voice, amongst a growing chorus of voices that will not be silenced! Let's make some noise, Australia!' Why would anyone on earth expect Grace to be silenced & compliant after all?

I understand what would happen if all us women spoke like Grace or our own version of that expression. No wonder men spend their whole lives trying to stop that happening. Wowsers. Imagine how different the world would be.

Pity that none of these types have any sympathy for men who have been falsely accused - as if that never happens
