ANALYSIS: You might not like Shorten, but in the end it may not matter

Witness the transformation of John Howard on the GST from Mr Never Ever to steely advocate after he had finally won office but found himself without an agenda, and under pressure from the business community. If he wins, his relationships within his own government, and party, will change.

He has been an inordinately lucky politician in that he now benefits from a change in leadership protocols, formed in the wake of the leadership carnage of which he was a part, that make it hard to unseat him.He is also exceptionally lucky in the quality of his colleagues which old Labor hands regularly tout as the most talented frontbench since the early days of the Hawke-Keating government.

Mr Shorten has notably managed to keep his parliamentary party united, despite at least two people, Mark Butler and Anthony Albanese, wanting his job at various times. He has not shunned them but instead given Mr Butler one of the most politically important portfolios, climate change, and Mr Albanese the crucial infrastructure job.He chairs civilised and inclusive cabinet meetings.

This now comprises the parliamentary leaders: Mr Shorten, Tanya Plibersek, Penny Wong and Don Farrell, along with shadow treasurer Chris Bowen, House Leader Tony Burke and workplace shadow Brendan O'Connor. Nothing much goes to shadow cabinet that hasn't already been through the leadership group, and there have been a number of widely noted occasions when shadow cabinet has been stopped so that the leadership group could go off and decide where the discussion would land.

What a stupid tax payer funded article.

Fortunately Shorten says he is the next Bob Hawke😂

What's there to like absolutely nothing, the man is clueless, empty vessel who can only repeat what he has managed to learn from the script and that is pretty minimal.

Shorten is a grub like most of the abc lefty fanatics

But correct with the analysis of Scumo being the master of the brush off, failing to answer questions, climate change denier, but believes in the supernatural? but coal is ok.

Why aren’t you reporting the rape allegations against Bill Shorten? Isn’t this news?

this is corruption whoever wrote, posted it was involved in its publication your all part of a corrupt system that is costing taxpayers a billion dollars a year how dare you post an advertisement for a politician really you are thieves ABC is supposed to be impartial

The problem is not just Shorten but all of the other Labor party people who have showed how little integrity they also have when they have backed him even though they know exactly what he has done and what he is like, how shifty, dishonest and insincere a human that he is.

You might not like theirABC but it the end they'll always back the left. On our $$$$$$.

This is the most disgraceful piece of ABC propaganda I have ever read, of course occurring the day before the election. Once again the highly partisan ABC has written a hit piece on Morrison and a puff piece about Shorten. The abuse of your own charter is disgraceful.

When Parties have disposed PMs in recent years we are told 'Oh but we don't elect a PM, we elect a Party'... Why then is there so much emphasis on Party leaders during election campaigns auspol

ABC continues to pump up the tyres on the Labor bus in the hope of getting a government that will increase its budget.

ABC knows Morrison is preferred PM and that Shorten is broadly disliked. So what's ABC's solution? Go and write an 'analysis' piece the point of which says being preferred doesn't matter. In other words, more ABC funds, time and resources promoting ALP's election campaign.

'The importance of being liked, or wanting to be liked, should only ever be a skill set for politics, not the defining feature of our leaders. The more important question really should always be what the leader actually does' Well said!

Are you trying to SELL us Bill Shorten as the new PM? - you are doing a hack job ABC - let’s wait until the election is over shall we!!!!

Australian Workers Union. After Saturday election AWUnion ?.provided lawyers, forget shop floor pathway, spring board into Federal politics.Unionism became a casualty of this devisive possession. Workers funded billshortenmp career. Productivity report, incoming. JustinianNews
