Fire update: A huge smoke plume is shrouding towns south-east of Melbourne as bushfires continue to rage out of control in the Bunyip State Forest, threatening homes and lives

The out-of-control bushfire is moving towards Princes Highway, and authorities fear properties and lives could be at risk as the mercury climbs. It is estimated the blaze is within one to two kilometres of homes. With road closures and emergency warnings issued for surrounding areas, cars with trailers, horse floats and caravans are backed up for at least a kilometre down Longwarry Nar-Nar Goon Road.Lightning sparked several bushfires in the Bunyip State Park near Gembrook and Tynong North.

Kelly Galvin, who lives in Gembrook with her husband and two sons, said many residents had decided to leave by early afternoon."There's also a lot of noise in the area with the helicopters and sirens and the smoke here is really quite bad. So, I think from a health perspective, with the smoke, a lot of people have decided to go."

"Huge bushfire in the national park in front of house," wrote Gembrook resident Sam Gordon on Instagram. An emergency relief centre has been set up at Pakenham Hall, on the corner of John and Henry streets, for residents of Gembrook, Tonimbuk and Tynong North. V/Line regional rail services between Southern Cross and Traralgon in the state's east have been affected by the Bunyip fire, with coaches originating from Warragul replacing trains for part of the journey.

Air conditioning in Australian schools should not be a luxury: Kelly | Sky News AustraliaLiberal MP Craig Kelly says air conditioning in schools and homes should not be a luxury in Australia, as it is a hot country. \n\nAir conditioning uses a lot of coal-fired power generated electricity, says Mr Kelly, so for a lot of schools cooling systems are a ‘no no’, due to the environmental impact and the running costs. \n\nMr Kelly suggests that instead of spending $75 billion on renewables over the past decade, the country should have spent $1 billion on installing air conditioning for student classrooms. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n Don't be like Craig. Craig is full of shit. Sure, let’s take our future generations back to the pre-refrigeration days. While we’re at it, may as well ban all refrigerators from the staff rooms and all heaters for the winter. Let’s see how the teaching and learning standards go. Then his office and home should not have aircon too. Environmental impact begins in the home
