OPINION: Protests erupting across China over the weekend are an unprecedented challenge to Xi Jinping’s power. However, there is no guarantee the uprising will bring change.

The extraordinary scenes of protests breaking out around China as Xi Jinping’s COVID policies drive 1.4 billion people to breaking point is history in the making.

Tiananmen was before the smartphone era and the unrest was largely concentrated in one place. This time protests have sprung up in dozens of cities and university campuses around the country.Widely used messaging apps such as WeChat are spreading the word by sharing images of people in the streets holding up symbolic white sheets of paper and calling for Xi to step down.

The rally cry of “Step down, Xi Jinping! Step down, Communist Party!” in the streets of Shanghai and other cities is an unprecedented challenge to a leader“It’s extraordinary and breaks the narrative of an omnipotent leader,” one former Australian diplomat who was in Beijing in 1989 but still works in China says. “However, I don’t think it will get much more serious as this is about as serious as it can get for the government. They will have had a huge fright.

And if things did get out of hand, Xi and the Communist Party, backed by the People’s Liberation Army, could act quickly, swiftly and ruthlessly. China is also scrambling to hide from its citizens the fact that the rest of the world is living with the virus.

Protests erupt in China over COVID rulesSky News Political Editor Andrew Clennell says protests against the Chinese leadership over its zero COVID policy are believed to be the biggest since Tiananmen Square. “There has been some media speculation these anti-Xi Jinping protests are the biggest in China since Tiananmen Square,” Mr Clennell said. “Australian government sources tell me that they do not believe that is the case - they think that there have been bigger protests in between 1989 and now, it is just the footage typically doesn’t get out. “The Australian government … is monitoring it closely but believes that the Chinese regime most likely will make some concessions on its lockdown policy, maybe sack some local officials and this will die down.” More AngertainmentMedia
