Protesters in Urumqi, the capital of Xinjiang, blame restrictions for death toll of 10 in apartment block fire

Photograph: Video obtained by ReutersPhotograph: Video obtained by ReutersProtests have broken out in China’s far westernregion, with crowds shouting at hazmat-suited guards after a deadly fire triggered anger over their prolonged Covid-19 lockdown as nationwide infections set another record.

Videos showed people in a plaza singing China’s national anthem with its lyric “Rise up, those who refuse to be slaves” while others shouted that they wanted to be released from lockdowns., with many of Urumqi’s 4 million residents barred from leaving their homes for 100 days. The city reported about 100 new cases in each of the past two days.against the mainly Muslim ethnic minority, including forced labour in internment camps. China strongly rejects such claims.

Dali Yang, a political scientist at the University of Chicago, said such a “blame the victim” attitude would make people angrier. “Public trust will just sink lower,” he said.Users on China’s Weibo platform described the incident as a tragedy that sprang out of China’s insistence on sticking to its zero-Covid policy and something that could happen to anyone. Some lamented its similarities to the deadly September crash of a Covid quarantine bus.

While the country recently tweaked its measures, shortening quarantines and taking other targeted steps, this coupled with rising cases has caused widespread confusion and uncertainty in big cities, including Beijing, where many residents are locked down at home.

Media ‘barely’ mentioned Andrews government’s ‘incompetent’ COVID-19 handlingThe media has failed to make the Andrews government's 'incompetent' handling of COVID-19 the centre of the Victorian state election campaign, according to Sky News Digital Editor Jack Houghton. Victorians will head to the polls on Saturday to vote in the state election with Premier Daniel Andrews set to face off against Opposition Leader Matthew Guy. 'Melbourne was the most locked-down city in the world and decisions made to strip people of their civil liberties were not made because of science, but politics,' Mr Houghton said. 'Lazy and incompetent politicians who ignored the World Health Organisation's advice to use lockdowns only as a last resort to bolster health resources, have spent this campaign patting themselves on the back. 'Knowing what we know now, you would think the media would have turned this campaign into a referendum on the Andrews government's handling of COVID-19. 'Most days it barely raised a mention and instead voters were briefed daily on scandals with previously unknown politicians on topics such as race and religion.' Jack on crack Never forgive never forget what they did to us. End the tryanny. Ha ha Murdoch has lost his influence, he’s as limp as his knob!
