The leader of which great power has done these five things during the COVID-19 outbreak? First, misled the world – and his own country – by pretending that there was no problem at the outset.
Donald Trump and Xi Jinping are more alike in their handling of the coronavirus crisis than they would concede.Although there are many brave and honourable people doing selfless work in both countries, they have been betrayed by their leaders. How many people around the world have died needlessly because Xi suppressed the truth of the original outbreak last year and pretended there was no virus?
Of course, the US has truth on its side in pointing out that the pandemic is a made-in-China phenomenon. The Chinese Foreign Ministry's response – to claim that the US Army started the infection in China – is just pathetic. But each is using the accusations against the other to deflect blame for their own incompetence and betrayal at home.
He predicts "the most difficult phase since the establishment of US-China diplomatic relations in the 1970s".The two superpowers are setting up their handling of the crisis as a contest between two forms of government – China's authoritarianism versus American democracy. In truth, these two leaders have demonstrated that both forms can produce disastrous outcomes. Democracy's advantage is that the people, if they so choose, can bloodlessly remove a bad leader.
This is not a crisis of autocracy nor a crisis of democracy. It is a crisis caused by overpoliticisation. Different types of politics, yes. But they have both bungled so badly because they refuse to set aside their political projects and personal vanities to deal with a medical and biological crisis.
As the two superpowers intensify their rivalry, where does that leave Australia? It would be a fatal error to treat this is a matter of moral equivalence. So what if Xi and Trump are as bad as each other? Australia can't treat this as an interesting intellectual exercise. This is not about the relativities of morality but the absolute of the national interest.
fake news !
In history such men were finally beheaded or put to death in a similar horrific manner. Their incompetence will be the death of many.
Comparing Trump to Xi Jinping is peak Age.
Yes
Ha ha - Finally some (some!) sense from the press. SlopeOfHope msgbaloo JoeBarbutoMBA BrandonFeltman
I wonder if you will get a response from Donnie realDonaldTrump. No doubt it’s fake news in his mind.
What a pathetic article blaming trump for this ? China is the one to blame if trump did wrong so did every other country in the world all are affected and wasnt much more that could of been done
Dumb & Dumber.
No mention of the WHO?
It appears that life is cheap in the eyes of these two power hungry leaders.
Trumps problem is he’s a money man. Pings problem is he’s a pshycotic sociopath.
It's amazing how much the western press is bending over backwards to try to justify the disaster that is the US today. Daily US death tolls hidden (even when 4500+ a day), blaming everyone but the US itself, calling for Kangeroo court investigations.. The buck stops with Trump
The media is a delirious as they fall in and out of complete relevance.
Yeah but who cares about facts now days
Really? Asia Times journalist Pepe Escobar says 'if you think US intelligence agencies didn't spot China's People's Daily telling the world about Covid on JANUARY 8, feel free to buy Saddam's WMDs at the nearest Wallmart'. Scapegoats are easily found by the irresponsible
China didn't know what they were dealing with at first and yet they still seem to have gotten ahead of it due to a massive lockdown by Xi. America knew in advance and yet millions of its citizens are still in denial and are openly defying their State Govts.
The blame is entirely with China as they stopped domestic flights in & out of Wuhan on 21 Jan 2029, but allowed international flights. China failed to report the seriousness of the virus & continue to obfuscate the figures. This is an entirely Chinese issue, not Trump's.
Equating the role of the US President with the actual one person who is responsible for the entire outbreak, a self appointed dictator for life presiding over a one party totalitarian state, Xi Jinping, is pathetic nonsense.
Lol at the narrative. People know now that the media is our greatest enemy.
