It was a meeting that Princess Anne had wanted for two years. After two years of delays caused by the pandemic, fires and floods, the Princess Royal met with the families of volunteer firefighters Geoffrey Keaton and Andrew O’Dwyer who died in the Green Wattle Creek blaze a week before Christmas 2019 to offer her condolences.

“It was like, ‘Wow, she wants to meet us’,” said O’Dwyer of the moment when she learned that Princess Anne had initiated the meeting. The children of fallen firefighters Andrew O’Dwyer and Geoff Keaton at a state memorial in 2020. Now nearly four, the children were born within two days of each other.Keaton and O’Dwyer, volunteers with the Horsley Park Brigade of the Rural Fire Service, were killed on the Green Wattle Creek fire ground in Buxton, south-west of Sydney, in December 2019.
