Rural traditions and royal aplomb have combined for the opening of Sydney's Royal Easter Show

Princess Anne listened to stories from farmers of drought and flood as she officially opened this year’s Sydney Royal Easter Show.

She arrived at the stadium on Saturday escorted by the NSW Mounted Police in a horse-drawn caleche, or carriage - the same she rode in with the Queen, Prince Philip and Prince Charles during the opening of the 1970 Royal Easter Show.Princess Anne spent her first engagement of this trip inspecting the district displays, taking time to hear the challenges faced by those on the land after years of drought and recent floods.

Jill Kellerman travelled to Homebush from Bathurst with daughter Brianna to get a glimpse of the princess up close. “I would like to wish all competitors the best of luck with the show and hope of having a memorable experience,” she said.
