Victorians have been warned to be ready for aftershocks in the wake of the Mansfield earthquake. But what should they do if they feel one? Here are some answers.

On Wednesday morning, parts of south-east Australia were rocked by a magnitude-5.9 earthquake that centred in the regional Victorian town of Mansfield.

News Breakfast had finished but the cameras were still rolling and host Michael Rowland wanted to leave the building while sports presenter Tony Armstrong clung on to the desk and said, "That's still tremoring".And given that Victoria's emergency services commissioner said the state should prepare for aftershocks it is definitely worth investigating further.

"Aftershocks can occur for years after a major earthquake. For example, we are still experiencing aftershocks from the [magnitude-] 6.6 earthquake in Tennant Creek which occurred in 1988," they said in a quote attributed to a senior seismologist. They are, in fact, just smaller earthquakes and occur in the same general area during the days and years following a larger event.
