, have criticised Australia's submarine plans, worrying it might help fuel an arms race in Asia and feed into broader tensions across the region. The ABC has been told that the Vice Chief of the Defence Force, Vice Admiral David Johnston, will visit South-East Asia next week as part of a broader diplomatic push designed to reassure nearby countries about the submarines plan.He is expected to visit Singapore and Malaysia, as well as Indonesia.
Earlier this week, Australia's ambassador to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations , Will Nankervis, issued a statement emphasising the defence technology agreement with the United States and the United Kingdom which will allow Australia to access nuclear submarine technology, known as AUKUS, was "not a defence alliance or pact".
It is not the first time Vice Admiral Johnston has been entrusted with a sensitive diplomatic task in the region. Earlier this week the Philippines Foreign Minister, Teodoro Locsin Jr, said his country backed the new pact because it would help address a military "imbalance" in the region.
Do we have a non-racist non sinophobic 3rd party that is not US lapdog? Please!
Disappointing. Utterly disappointing. In the US, they got Blue MAGA, and Red MAGA. In Australia, we get Blue Lapdog and Red Lapdog. Scotty will win again. Labor can't an election, dancing with the music Libs are playing. SenatorWong, when I am just abt to vote for Labor.
Good old Penny! Reliable as ever.
jaquix173 Leading the Coalition of THE EFFING willing, (I'm informed it's the actual name of the FORCE?) Was nothing to worry about. IN THE SOUTH CHINA SEA!!! Penny So No, no more love for Penny. 🥲🥲🥲
Seriously if China was to attack Australia do you not think that rest of the western world would be on notice ? I suspect China would become a periiah and end up either starting world war 3 or see their prosperity perish .
She is a defence minister now ? Ffs those subs are going to boost our jobs and protect our nation .
AUKUS? AUKward.
well as Labor's foreign affairs spokeswoman how about aiding strandedaussies at least argue for some food parcels its only been a year and a half
Penny should put her fears aside. Even without Nuclear Subs Australia could not defend itself against better equipped powers. (Most of which has been built using Australian Iron ore).
Why not question AUKUS - period.
pallisier David Pope answered that question in a drawing.
Penny Wong trying at any cost to remain in the news and/or remotely relevant. I’m shocked
This is so typical Labor.
Don’t we use other counties designs for pretty much everything already? If that’s the case may as well use the best designs and technology.
In an open liberal democracy, when a major international agreement has been reached with details still unclear, it’s appropriate that SenatorWong engage, asking some important questions to help us all understand & to hold the government to account. Gotta love an open society!
Submarine defence A nuclear sub can do up to 60kph and patrol a coastline of 27,000+ Kilometers, an absolutely useless defence initiative and if it fires one rocket location is known and goodbye sub, SenatorWong Someone needs to stand up and tell this
Labor had been extremely weak and tactically zilch. The product differentiation between Labor and LNP isn't there. Though Morrison Govt resembles that from 3rd world,ALP lead in polls is small , soft and will fizzle out, post Covid in 2 months
Is she on the evil China ccp secret payroll ?
The Keating Effect. A lot of back peddling going on.
Oh, I sorry .. was Australia ‘ever’ independent militarily? Pretty sure we always depended on the fact that if the shit really hit the fan, the US and/or Britain would came to the rescue … autonomy … really !
Does the shadow foreign minister understand the threat that's going on?
