Supermarket giant Woolworths has quietly rolled out paper bags at selected stores as an alternative to plastic reusable ones. Thoughts? 🤔

A Woolworths spokeswoman told news.com.au the company was currently trialling the paper bags in 21 stores.

“The vast majority of our customers bring their own bags to shop, but we know there are occasions when they forget or visit our stores unplanned,” the spokeswoman said.“We’re trialling paper bags in around 20 stores to test customer demand and will closely monitor feedback as we do.”The spokeswoman said Woolworths would continue to offer its Bag for Good and 15 cent reusable plastic bags to customers across the country.

Great about time

Back to 1970! Perfect 👌🏼 💞💞💞

Well done Wwths. Those so called heavier plastic bags are the worst. People pay 15c, use it once, & it'll be in the bin next collection day. Most don't come back on the person's next shopping day. Put handles on the paper bags. There's potential for reuse. Don't be lazy, people

Paper is a 100% renewable what took them so long

Love this.. Should have happened years ago.. There is enough reusable waste paper to stock all supermarkets with paper bags, maybe should be the same price as plastic bags though.. Better incentive to use them.

Yes, because they are spending a fortune on retrieving trolleys, as well as repairs/lost trolleys, as people refuse to pay for bags each visit.

As long as it’s recycled paper! No trees lost their lives I hope!

Crazy Idea what bout Biodegradable Plastic Bags that degrade into a $1 token that fits perfectly into a Wooly's child pokie machine that gives them 'a chance' to win a plastic toy, after all, we need to counter/tuffluv all those golden star stickers from the free fruit, right?..

That will work when you have 3 bottles of OJ tearing the handles apart

Thieves

There are plenty of eco grocery bags from eBay, packabe, durable and can be machine washed. Not cheap but worth it.

Bout time

And when will we stop packing things in plastic packaging unnecessarily?

Awesome

It’s what they packed groceries in until they changed to plastic. Everything old is new again.

I'm horrified! They're hardly reusable and promotes the cutting down of millions of trees, using tins of water in paper making and untold energy to manufacture the paper and the bags...!! FFS!

How about ditching bags full stop. Force customers to bring and reuse their own.

Duh!

20c a bag! Paper bags are a great idea. But enough with the big supermarkets making a huge profit just on bags.

No thoughts

Hopefully they're MADE FROM RECYCLED PAPER. or else it'll all be a green sham. Off with plastics in with paper and off with the trees to produce them. The devil or the devil ? Which ones good ?

We started off with paper bags. It was the greens that brought in plastic. It should of never happened in the first place!!

They also support the torture of animals by endorsing halal, so this is just another crap decision!

I packed paper bags for years as a supermarket kid. NEVER had an issue.

They should be handing out the paper bags for free to their customers as a token of appreciation for shopping at Woolworths.....the bigger they are the greedier they get.

I’m not buying them either

Monster merchant supporting another monster producer all on the account of clients and the clients it wearing the cost biting their tongues.

'OKAY IDIOTS! GET MAD AT THIS FOR SOME REASON!'

Biodegradable. Cover books with it

Let’s start cutting down millions of trees 🙄

Always said BringBackPaperBags

ggmckay11 Good thing. I’ll still bring my own bags, but a good second option.

Good start indeed. Any big food providers should replace plastic packaging by something more earth friendly as well.

harrisfarm1971 have no bags, boxes provided or bring your own bags. And it works perfectly well.

I am more than Likely showing my age here; I used to shop with these WAAAYYY Back NO After my Pet T-REX Died🤨 n is was a case off PUT THE EGGS ON TOP‼️🖕🤣 LOL LOL. OH-One More IMPORTANT Lesson; If The BAG GETs WET HOLD THE BOTTOM OF THE BAG‼️ PS; Bags help Iron Pleats🖕

About time?

👍

In the 70’s you used to get plain paper bags bigger than this for nothing when you did your shopping. Why print on them? Save the money.

About bloody time

Charge if they have to, but atleast make the bags strong enough to actually hold groceries.

Anything to make a profit!

Luv it

What is wrong with people in this country?

SAVE THE TREES!

They need to brand it don't they 🤦‍♂️

5c more 🤷🏽‍♂️

Typical supermarket ripoff!! Charging consumets for carrying THEIR advertizing bags! They should revert to plain brown paper bags, and provide them at no charge!

When I first started shopping you got paper bags or cardboard boxes were provided for groceries.

Is this quiet?

Fond memories of 'cold' items sliding out of the bottom of bags...NOT Not so fond memories of struggling with 'pushers' or 'trolleys'... Maybe the supermarkets could give away metal lockers on wheels with every $30 spent?

The tear and break your glass and eggs....which Woolies wabts do you buy more. Switch to ALDI.

Are they free?

Love

So the forests will be at risk

Should be 100%

Still not gonna pay for it

Good

They used to be free

Stop putting plastic on bananas

As someone who can only order online for delivery, I think this is AWESOME NEWS!! Hoping they use hemp/bamboo/recycled though!

More profit?

tyrelle123 They can stick them up their clakker

Buying bags to 'save the environment' is the biggest con of the 21st century.

What happens if it pour down with heavy rain and you have one of Woolworths paper bag in your hand!

About bloody time

Brilliant

geoffrey_payne This is long overdue. Ditch plastic altogether.

Better than nothing. Good job

When I was a kid we had paper bags & cardboard boxes at supermarkets, this was stopped to save trees by environmentalists & we got plastic bags. History repeats

geoffrey_payne I have a heap of the Coles cotton bags they are still going strong and are easy to wash

I like it

Sounds like the old days! But now they're charging for the bags! They should build the price into the cost of running a bloody supermarket! Surely the profits they make from all their PokerMachines could cover it!!! lol auspol

About time

As long as I’m not misgendered, I’ll be fine with most decisions that Woolworths agonise over.

Hallelujah!

We go back to the old argument of cutting down trees again. Shopping bag saga will never end regardless if it paper or plastic. As for me, I will reuse bags. Even bought reusable and washable fresh produce bags to cut down plastic there.

Paper bags are good. But why don't supermarkets sell clothe / calico bags. Something that's durable and can be washed. I've managed to purchase a couple and find them great.

Maybe the old style paper bags are the way to go...

As long as they're strong enough no drama ... some of those paper bags with stupid string handles can't handle the weight of 2ltrs of milk

There bloody hopeless ever tried using one in the rain I hope woolworths will be offering replacements on the broken items when the bag breaks cause of there wokeness

They stopped the plastic bags only to replace it with plastic toys - Woolworths do not care about the environment - they will do nothing unless it turns a profit

Much better.

Great idea they had this years ago

Fantastic

Proof, if ever you needed it, that the whole charging for bags scam was all about cutting costs and nothing to do with the environment

Hemp or something that doesn't involve cutting down trees or polluting the earth. Indonesia has a plastic type material that breaks down and the fish can eat it if it goes into the ocean. Why are we not doing this? scottmorrison

Paper bags come from trees! Most of our climate problems that people bang on about are created by our deforestation of our planet! We need more trees, not less!

Are they made from recycled paper ? We had these in the 70's (no handles though), they called them sacks (USA idea). They were useless then for heavy groceries, and the occasional leaking was an issue. Buy the jute ones, they are tougher or the heavy duty plastic ones ones.

Everything Old is New again

Did the fake outrage party force wollies and coles to dump plastic bags, they did that but your still not satisfied

Make then out of hemp instead of trees.

Good on Woolworths. Well done 👍 woolworths

Good, until you have milk, meat or frozen food in them and the bag breaks.

Great idea Woolies

At least they are recyclable

NSW govt urged to support plastic bag ban | Sky News AustraliaNSW Labor has again urged the state government to end the use of single use plastic bags in retail shops, putting a bill in parliament for the fourth time since 2016 to ban the bag. \n\nOpposition leader Jodi McKay said it is time lagging NSW caught up with other states in adopting the plastic bag policy.\n\n“We are the last state in Australia, even Queensland has banned the bag,” the Labor leader said.\n\nThe bill would ban single use plastics under 35 microns and would involve $5,000 fines for retailers who breach that ban.\n ..except ALDI bags... Another scam that sheeple buy into... Ignoring the fact that the solution once again created a bigger problem of thicker heavier plastic bags now thrown in landfills polluting the country and water ways.
