A 45-year-old Vietnamese woman has been expelled from Sydney Airport after biosecurity officers discovered a stash of undeclared pork and food items in her luggage. In a first under new Australian biosecurity laws, a Vietnamese woman had her visitor visa cancelled for failing to declare food in her luggageASF has been detected in around 50 per cent of pork products stopped at international airports
The woman was carrying 4.6 kilograms of pork and 470 grams of eggs, along with kilograms of quail, pate, fruit, garlic and squid. Ms McKenzie said African swine fever was potentially the worst animal health disease the world had ever seen. A spokesperson from the Federal Agricultural Department confirmed that new test results reveal ASF has been detected in around 50 per cent of pork products stopped at international airports, up from 15 per cent from nine months ago.
Stood out like dog’s balls.
Expulsion a lot more resounding than a $250 petty fine.
They should be deported and fined
.... but why......
👏👏❤️
good work!
Close to 30,000 people entering Australia each year are found to be in breach of quaratine laws with food items, IO wonder how many of those have had their visas torn up. Taking their food and sending every one of them home on the next plane would quickly solve the problem.
Maybe all food should be banned, no exceptions. Bloody idiots.
How much of it actually gets through
Why? Just why?
The numbers are astounding. Are people that ignorant, or is it some concerted effort to spread the disease in Australia?
All food brought in by travellers should be banned..ALL!...so much time and staff wasted just to police peoples bags at entry points all over the country...of course the govt is making an absolute fortune in fines from all these people
Wastes a flight costing hundreds to smuggle food worth tens of dollars? Pretty silly.
Just deported?
FakeNewsMedia
Fantastic decision!!!
Tough, but the Africa swine fever could decimate Australia's pig industry, and who knows what other animals is could effect, a strong message must be sent.
The fines for these offences are so inconsequential, they should be at least $5000 for repeat offenders. People cannot feign ignorance when there are so many warnings on the plane and as you depart the air craft.
Maybe we need to TOTALLY close our borders to visitors from countries where this disease is present, or has the potential to be. Until it’s eradicated in those places. Biosecurity must take precedence over tourism, money etc.
I have watched that border protection show and no offender seems to have any respect for Australian Custom Control, and offenders only ever get a slap on the wrist. Any wonder people are doing what they like.
