Australia's newest Indigenous senator has vowed to take her push for Aboriginal sovereignty to Canberra and oppose steps towards reconciliation that don't involve a treaty.

Australia's newest Indigenous senator has vowed to take her hardline push for Aboriginal sovereignty to Canberra and oppose any steps towards reconciliation that do not involve a treaty.

Aboriginal activist Robbie Thorpe, Lidia Thorpe's uncle, leads a rally on the steps of Victoria's Parliament in 2017.Robbie Thorpe speaks of genocide, sovereignty and treaty as the “Black GST”. He argues that until Australia addresses these fundamental issues, it continues to live off the proceeds of historic crimes and cannot hope to achieve genuine reconciliation.

“If I didn’t have my family and my community backing me I wouldn’t be doing this at all. It is my people that have put me here. The Greens just stamped it. The Greens members stamped what my people have been asking for and calling for.” “There is this feeling of hopelessness on my country,’’ she says. “The opportunities just aren’t there for people. The racism is rife but not blatant. It is undercover racism, an unconscious bias that people have.’’

Just read the comments... do all your articles act like magnets for the ignorant? Utterly astounding.

This woman is a disgrace to the political process. She is a self promoting opportunist and a complete idiot with no understanding of government. lyidathorpe=OXYGEN-THIEF

I assume Ms Thorpe is aware of this requirement: Every senator ... shall before taking his seat make and subscribe before the Governor-General, or some person authorised by him , an oath or affirmation of allegiance in the form set forth in the schedule to this Constitution.

Won't her term expire on 30 Jun 22 ?

lidiot

She clearly claimed on tv that she doesn't recognise herself as an Australian, she recognises herself as aboriginal.. if so.. what is she doing in the Australian parliament if she doesn't have its best interest at heart.

Oh yay

mirandadevine ScottMorrisonMP PeterDutton_MP Greens elected senator Recent scandal involving NASCAR’s BubbaWallace highlights the dangers of overstating the prevalence of racism and inventing unnecessary hatred, according to Sky News host Chris Kenny.

She is teaching us all about hypocrisy

Is this the same woman that wanted Queensland and Victoria to be renamed

Redefining Australia from ground zero. I wonder what that would like... if Captain Cook didn’t claim the country whatsoever. If he sat down and tried to understand the Aboriginal. Has that ever happened anywhere in such encounters? By any such explorer?

Actually, bring on the vote. Remember, the vote can swing either way. Reinstate aboriginal sovereignty, or quash native title claim forever. Let’s bring an end to this debate forever.

The racism on this thread is sickening, I propose those upset with equality be moved out of their house (stolen) and be made to work for food in a labour camp, forbidden to speak English and have their children stolen then given a drug of dependency and berated on skin colour

“My people have been oppressed for 240 years” blah blah blah snore. Honey you got to make your own happiness. My people were convicts treated appallingly by other white people. First fleet was white slavery. Do I hold a grudge against colonial England? Do I care? No. Grow up

This is a really good article. I would suggest all the commenters on here actually read it.

To most of the comments below, I'll say it for you, 'lm not a racist'. How sad.

Is she comparing us, the white Australian, to the likes of communist China?

Then leave.

Oh she “identifies” as Aboriginal so she is Aboriginal! Now she can trot out a contrived victimhood in order to try and create some personal relevance and have the ABC fawn over her. I’m guessing she is 1% Aboriginal and 99% Green ratbag. She’s also a racist bringing race up.

Tell her she’s dreaming.

Go for it. Let it consume you. That treaty is necessary for all Australians.

And here we go ... Another senator filling a casual vacancy, so unapproved by the electorate, eschewing representation of her state in favour of pushing an ideological agenda.

If you are an elected representative in Canberra you represent Australian sovereignty not Aboriginal sovereignty.

Why doesn’t do something about this?

Here we go

She couldn’t hold Batman but gets gifted a senate seat on the back of the international wave of black lives matter terrorism...Truly a minority that will agitate, block, dissent & ultimately disappear back into irrelevance it belongs auspol greens

Good gig if you can get it $200k captain's call

Sovereignty was never ceded so there has to be a treaty before reconciliation. auspol

I wonder what her non indigenous ancestors would think?

A Treaty at this point in time is just proving how ungrateful/ignorant they really are in receiving benefits over other Australians for the decades they have been supported...They cannot segregate themselves from society & still expect to control it how they see fit!

Equality for all, they should now get jobs so they can be treated as equals.

Has anyone got the number for Alan Joyce, so we can connect her up with the first flight out when theyre up & running again seeing she doesnt want to be part of the country going forward if she doesnt get what she wants?

Irrelevant parasite on tax payers.

BTW love the artwork behind the senator !

Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

She was interviewed with Jacinta Nampijinpa Price, thorpe is divisive and does not represent the views of all indigenous people, but she will fit in well with all the other nut job greens, and she'll help to drive their vote down even further

If you feel so strong that you are not part of Team Australia, then stick with your principles and resign from the Australian Senate. Pretty simple really.

What do we get in this treaty?
