Qantas says it does not expect to do any significant flying for at least 12 months and the government must extend JobKeeper for badly hit industries.

Qantas chief executive Alan Joyce has called on the Morrison government to extend the JobKeeper program for industries hit hardest by the coronavirus pandemic after the airline announced it would sack 6000 workers and cut $15 billion in costs.

"We have to position ourselves for several years where revenue will be much lower," Mr Joyce said. "Adapting to this new reality means some very painful decisions."The cuts come amid growing fears of a second wave of COVID-19 inside Australia, and signs the virus is escalating in key offshore markets such as the US and UK.

Mr Joyce said he was having "constructive" discussions with the government about “JobKeeper or some alternative form of support” after the wage subsidy scheme ends in September. All of the Qantas' stood down workers are receiving the $1500 per fortnight payment, and so are most of Virgin's 9000 staff. Virgin's administrator, Deloitte, has also asked the government to extend Jobkeeper to helpQantas said its 6000 redundancies would include office roles , ground operations including baggage handlers , cabin crew , engineering and pilots at Qantas and its budget arm, Jetstar.

Mr Joyce said he expected Qantas would not do any meaningful international flying until July next year other than to New Zealand and possibly some other countries within "travel bubbles", with capacity to recover only to 50 per cent in the 2022 financial year and 75 per cent in 2023.However domestic capacity, currently sitting at 15 per cent of normal levels, could recover to 70 per cent within a year, he said.

A very disturbing situation to see 6000 jobs lost overnight in just one iconic company..... The Fedral Government must act to ensure States open borders across Australia asap.

I was intrigued to hear him outline a re employment plan which assumed internation travel being normalized in 12 months 'because' vaccine will be available by then. Do all globally affected companies plan this way? abc730

Qantas to cut 6,000 jobs, slash costs as part of coronavirus recovery planQantas says it will cut 6,000 jobs and continue to stand down 15,000 employees as part of its recovery plan from the COVID pandemic. How good is the Morrison Govt? Gives millions to companies who take it and sack their workers anyhow, and takes millions from the ABC who then have to sack their workers. Is Morrison's plan to get everyone sacked except for him and his inept Govt who actually deserve to be sacked Slash CEO Joyce ($23million)and executives and board - more millions. They do not care about people. Joyce needs to be the first to go that will be a great cost saving measure for Qantas.
