ANALYSIS: Will coronavirus choke off Frydenberg's budget surplus?

At least a few economists are saying there's a slim chance that number could be negative, raising the small risk that Australia is in a recession right now.The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate has risen from 4.9 per cent to 5.3 per cent since February last year. In trend terms, which smooths out seasonal variations, the unemployment rate has risen from 5.1 per cent to 5.2 per cent.

Mr Richardson added that the Government thankfully still had some fiscal wiggle room because Treasury had kept its Budget assumptions very conservative. For instance, the Government had to put aside $2 billion for a bushfire relief fund, and the coronavirus could end up costing the budget billions more than expected.

would love for it to be choked off. You criticised them for pushing for a surplus and now will criticise them if they fall short. You do not represent the broader view of the nation. gofundyourselves

AmyRemeikis Yes. Just as the bushfires have and his total incompetence in managing the overall economy. He has been to focused on the surplus

auspol forgot that surplus is for the gd of the ppl. Esp in bad time. Don't gv a turd if we dont hv 1 for 2020. Now is a bad time.

I thought the north Sydney pool did that already.

.... will corona virus completely destroy the budgets of households and businesses.

the useless leftist of the taxpayers funded trying to harass the government. Why don't they talk about what Labor would do: take debt to pay for boaties health care and subsidize Solar and Wind dodgy technologies.

The budget was dead well before catching the virus.

The 'surplus'.

Why sensationalise this issue when the world is being rocked by COVID19 and we have managed so far to fend it off. This is not ANALYSIS its ABC playing politics. The only this auntyabc can do is post negative political commentary.

Fires, floods, drought and Coronavirus what do you reckon? Silly question. The budget is unimportant compared to community health. No matter what level of the virus it is going to be devastating. Close our boarders and bring on the vaccine.

But....but..... auspol

To focus on a “surplus” while the economy and jobs are on the skids is totally irresponsible. No point in focussing on “the future” when the present is a mess. Be accountable for a change.

No, slash more welfare off the sick and poor, close a couple of hospital, close a few schools, increase Robo debt, further reduce public services, no problem, after all it is the LNP way and it works a treat, no brainer.

Surplus at all costs. Oh no. Not all costs. Just the poor, sick, disabled, rural/remote etc. These groups will be paying & suffering so the LNP can get their budget surplus. Any reasonable person would say “with the fires & Corona Virus we accept there will be no surplus.

It's our surplus ABC, you live in tiny bubble way too long, where money is for nothing🤦‍♂️.

AmyRemeikis Will white anting our institutions and the rule of law destroy our democracy?

Oh no, not the surplus! Never fear we haven't cut health, education and all notions of decency to the absolute bone yet. Plenty more fat to trim.

AmyRemeikis How do you choke something that never existed?

Assuming he really had one to start with

Govt's budget surplus in doubt amid coronavirus fallout | Sky News AustraliaThe Federal Government is continuing to prepare the ground for its much-anticipated budget surplus to disappear following the coronavirus outbreak. \n\nThe government has been retreating from previous predictions that it would deliver a budget surplus in May with Treasurer Josh Frydenberg revealing the financial impact of the coronavirus would be worse than the bushfires.\n\nHe also argued no one could have predicted the virus would emerge when figures were being calculated last year, standing firm that no extreme fiscal measures would be taken. \n\n“The virus continues to evolve and depending on how long the travel restrictions are in place, and how the virus evolves globally will obviously impact that final number,” Mr Frydenberg told Sky News.\n\nThe coronavirus has spread across the European continent overnight with more countries recording their first cases. \n\nImage: Getty Imagine how Australia would surf through this calamity (fires then corona virus) under Labor &Greens leadership? In the best of times they're aming to destroy economy by introducing socialism, and have drag queens read to children 🙄 The budget surplus a) wasn't 'much anticipated'. b) was always bollox.

Coronavirus to 'significantly' impact Aust economy | Sky News AustraliaTreasurer Josh Frydenberg has flagged the economic impact of the coronavirus will be “more significant” than the bushfires, amid growing speculation the promised budget surplus is all but gone.\n\nSpeaking in Parliament on Tuesday, Prime Minister Scott Morrison was flanked by Mr Frydenberg, Health Minister Greg Hunt and Chief Medical Officer Brendan Murphy to discuss the impacts of the coronavirus. \n\nThe prime minister was eager to promote the success of the government’s travel ban in preventing the spread of the virus in Australia, but was frank about the impact on the economy. \n\nWhen asked, Mr Frydenberg said Treasury was still finalising modelling on how the virus will affect the economy, but outlined it was now impacting on exports and the supply chain. \n\n“The message is very clear. The impact will be more significant than the bushfires, and it plays out more broadly across the Australian economy,” he said. \n\nOn if the government will still achieve the promised budget surplus, Mr Morrison stopped short of confirming it would not occur. \n\n“Hands up those who thought there was going to be a coronavirus epidemic when the budget was released last May? Of course, no one did,' he said. \n JoshFrydenberg can you get your economic expert PMOnAir Murray to cost this all for us? We need leadership in these times JoshFrydenberg 😂🤣😂🤣😂 The surplus that was never there JoshFrydenberg Of course it’s gone. LiberalAus are the worst economic managers known to mankind. They’ve squandered the benefits of our post GFC boom, more than doubled our debt and will now blame fires, storms, disease and pestilence for their incompetence!
