Comment: The US President is not to blame for the mess o' potamia, and his desire to get Uncle Sam but of these “unwinnable wars” is fully understandable, writes Tom Switzer

It is against this background that President Trump’s decision to withdraw US troops from Syria – and the overwhelmingly hostile criticism it has provoked – is best understood.

I am not suggesting here that Trump "gets it" in the way Chirac clearly "got" post-war Iraq. The Donald lacks the kind of prudence that characterised Le Bulldozer’s world view. It’s just that Trump’s decision to withdraw from the forever wars of the Middle East is not as crazy as you might think. Before the invasion, Saddam’s Bathists – like the Hashemite monarchy, the British and the Ottomans – had allowed the minority Sunni Arabs to hold a disproportionate share of power and resources.

Next month marks the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, and it’s worth noting that since the end of the Cold War the US has been at war in three out of every four years.

🤮

Don’t stress about what is about to manifest itself......

So he’s sending the military to saudia arabia. Pls explain then...

Trump has already made your article redundant. See Saudi Arabia.

Obviously Switzer has bought Trump’s rhetoric lock, stock & barrel. The US will never stop involving itself in foreign conflicts as long as it in their interests to do so. Thousands of troops just sent to Saudi Arabia. How does that fit with your nonsensical commentary

Childish puns. Are there any real journalists left?

He's doing it at the wrong time! We're going to see ISIS reformed and reactivated!

What a load of 💩! U don’t leave allies to die!

He just sent thousands of troops, as well as fighter jets and missile systems to fuckin saudi Arabia to ratchet up the next war they want with iran you disingenuous hack

But by all means, do go and mess up Iran in the spirit of not making stupid wars

Being the US President, you’d think cleaning up US mess is actually his responsibility

Switzer - forever the craven apologist for the unstable & cornered Trump, who so clearly has no idea what he is doing beyond creating a distraction from his impeachment

Google 'Trump Towers Istanbul'

Somehow I think this commentary is not going to age well

Then why, of why are 1,800 troops being sent to Saudi Arabia? WTF?

GET OUT , the Americans go to the Kurds every time to do their Shitty Dirty work , then abandon them , they have such a Long History , Get a Bloody Grip SMH , TRUMP a bloody danger letting the Turks with a Big History of Abuse loose against the Kurds . Not Understandable

Trump is pulling those troops back because he has business dealings in Turkey. Who is stupid enough to think it's because he wants to bring troops home?

Switzer's a US foreign policy apologist, as any intelligent Australian would have been aware of for a long time. The reason Trump pulled the troops out was not to get out of an 'unwinnable war', but rather to ready them for an unwinnable war against Iran.

Tom is an idiot.

Kurds have over 10,000 ISIS prisoners. Trump did not have a strategy for this. No planning. He just put the free world at risk.

Trump could have negotiated a no fly zone. Instead he sided with Russia and China in the UNSC to vote against the EU motion to censure of Turkey. Can one really believe, like miracles Morrison, the USA will go to war for Australia. Bet Australia on an assumption? ausdef

Remind me again Tom just who got them into that mess?

An alternate point of view

Switzer writes about Trump like he’s a rational/reasonable potus. He isn’t. He also neglects to note anything about Turkish biz deals that prob drove Trump’s decision ie phone call with Erdogan et al. One response says “sychophant”. So, mission accomplished, buddy. SMH bencubby

Dogshit. Imagine becoming a journalist and writing this. Come on mate.

Sycophantic Switzer at it again. Trump left the Kurds for dead and you write this drivel. Shame on you

ASX to rise as Trump raises hopes for US-China trade dealAustralian shares are expected to rise modestly due to what investors perceived to be positive signals from high-level US-China trade talks. And who’s shorting the market this time? Will be a massive success for Trump if he can “improve protections of American intellectual property, end cyber theft and the forced transfer of technology to Chinese firms, curb industrial subsidies and increase US companies’ access to largely closed Chinese markets.” I think the operative word here is 'Hope'......
