A major magnitude 7.8 earthquake followed by another strong quake devastated wide swaths of Turkey and Syria on Monday, killing thousands of people. Here’s what to know.

The quake hit at depth of 18 kilometres and was centred in southern Turkey, near the northern border of Syria.

The Earth is divided into different pieces, “kind of like a jigsaw puzzle,” said Eric Sandvol, a seismologist at the University of Missouri. The quake occurred in a seismically active area known as the East Anatolian fault zone, which has produced damaging earthquakes in the past. It proved particularly catastrophic because it occurred at a shallow depth. Shallow earthquakes cause more damage in a wide area.
