Prime Minister Anthony Albanese confirmed there had been no Australian causalities caught in the Turkey-Syria earthquake at this stage after the death toll doubled to at least 3,500 people dead, with fears it could rise further amid search for survivors.

We continue to monitor the situation closely with our embassies in Ankara, Istanbul, and Beirut.Prime Minister Anthony Albanese confirmed on Monday night there had been no Australians casualties involved in the tragedy at this stage.

Syria was also hit by the quake with 1,297 reported dead so far, and another 1,353 injured across the towns of Aleppo, Latakia, Hama and Tartus. Earthquakes of this magnitude are rare, occurring only five times a year on average around the world with Monday's quake the strongest to hit Turkey in almost 100 years.
