Ukraine has no choice but to keep fighting until Russia is put all the way back in its box. But will the West’s patience last that long?

When the mercury gets to minus 20 degrees Celsius, it only takes five minutes, maybe 10, to start feeling sharp pain in the nose, ears and fingers. Give it another 20 minutes or so, and frostbite will be setting in.

It’s hard to see a tactical or strategic reason for Putin’s campaign to plunge ordinary Ukrainians into a frigid, benighted winter. It will make an already hard life even harder, but it won’t sap their will to resist. It looks like nothing more than a scorched-earth policy. Ukrainian State Emergency Service firefighters work to extinguish a fire after Russian rocket attack in Kyiv, Ukraine.“The devastating energy crisis, the deepening mental health emergency, constraints on humanitarian access and the risk of viral infections will make this winter a formidable test for the Ukrainian health system and the Ukrainian people,” he said.

Zelensky has urged people to be frugal with electricity. Deputy Prime Minister Iryna Vereshchuk has advised those most at risk to evacuate to less afflicted areas. Eventually, it will have to shift to older, less accurate Soviet-era missiles – with potentially grim consequences for civilian populations. There is far less sense of Russian superiority in the land war. The Ukrainians are holding out against the Russian assault on the town of Bakhmut, in Donetsk province. The wild card is that Russia has reportedly just redeployed its previously Kherson-based elite paratrooper regiment there. In other places, the Russians are digging in defensively.

Putin’s only solace: if nothing else, he can go on with his Chechnya-style project of trying to reduce the Ukrainian economy to total penury and dependency.

It's odd that, unlike the US, that attacks and destroys civilian infrastructure in its very first move when invading countries, Russia has left almost six months before doing this.

He wants to die.

No credible expert, and I mean NO credible expert thinks Russia will be 'put back in its box'. What a ridiculous article. Ukraine is bankrupt. 100% relying on charity. Europe has 'Ukraine fatigue'. Russia has mobilised and the Ukrainian electricity system is cactus. Oh dear..
