If you were left wondering why Donald Trump spoke about Iran, let us explain

Mass protests and nationwide strikes in opposition to the Shah snowballed into the 1979 Iranian Revolution and eventually a military government was appointed as the Shah fled to the US and the country became an Islamic republic.

Angered by America's role in protecting the Shah, in late 1979 protesters took over the US embassy in Iran's capital Tehran,, and took 66 Americans hostage. They would remain as prisoners for 444 days.Under immense pressure to secure the hostages' release, US president Jimmy Carter authorised a rescue mission which ended in embarrassing failure. The US slapped sanctions on Iran while at the same time negotiating for the hostages' release.

Then the Shah died in Egypt of cancer and Iraq invaded Iran, kicking off the Iraq-Iran war. In 1981, capitalising on anger about Carter's handling of the crisis, Ronald Reagan was elected US president, and sworn in at the same time the hostages were released. For the next eight years, Iran would be at war with Iraq, with the US openly supporting Saddam Hussein's Iraq while at the same timeBy 1988, the war came to an end, and Iran-US relations hit a new low when an American warship shot down an Iranian passenger plane, killing all 290 people on board.

Nope. But Nancy is
