Fewer cars, less congestion, less pollution. It's a tantalising prospect, but do the promises of free public transport stack up?

Mr Walker is also sceptical about the role ride-hailing services like Uber and Lyft can play in dealing with urban congestion.

And new research from the University of Kentucky suggests a correlation between the rise of ride-hailing services and a decline in public transport patronage in the United States.Transport engineer Gregory Erhardt surveyed publicly available transport data in 22 metropolitan areas. "That perhaps they are concentrated at night, bringing people home from bars when transit doesn't operate, and so forth.

I have been postulating this idea for ages! Think how many cars would come off the road, less pollution, etc. In the 60s in Italy a town did do this & it was a success; but of course the Govt changed & sadly it ended.

We sold the trains to the Chinese and also Darwin Port on 99 year lease, farms from generational foreclosed by banks and sold to the Chinese.

Why should it be? Some spending $$$ on coffee and pay for your damned transport, people.

Vested interests, who currently profit from payments, e.g. credit card companies (taking their cut of payments), the makers of the ticketing systems, toll road operators. If free, it'd be cheaper to run without the ticketing infrastructure, barriers. PublicTransport

now we have crowded trains n buses If they r free it'd become unbearable to catch trains &buses They wont be able to cope Many homes r far from stations n buses only run every hour

It is in Luxembourg free publictranport

Payment for fuel, servicing, buying buses, paying for roads, drivers wage & so on. If you want public transportation to be free, you pay for it & don’t ask me to pay for it.

We already have free Public Transport. Often only one in five commuters swipe their Myki and sometimes only one in ten.

Idiots

Thr “user pays” principle is addressed to the argument that tax supported activities provided free are intrinsically unfair to those tax payers who never use them. It also relieves strain on the budget.

Great article ABC. Would never have heard of this in Aust commercial media.

Not everything can be like the ABC

Tax payers pay the bill so I guess the free thing is sort of true

'Free, the government should pay for it' Nothing is free, the government does not pay. The tax payer pays, FFS.

Roads and transport never pay for themselves. Smart governments invest in whatever provides the greatest benefit by enabling society to function. PT is usually therefore where the money should go, and it provides its best return if tickets cost something.

I don’t know if it’s still the case but in Prague passengers paid 2 krona(?) to use a suburban train regardless of how far they traveled . No ticket. No expensive IT systems. No idea if it paid for itself.

It is LoL

If I don't use something, why should I have to pay for it?

Why is the Murray-Darling Basin so important and how did we end up at this point?Amid the deaths of millions of fish and a scathing royal commission report, a war of words has erupted around the Murray–Darling Basin. How did we get here? And the third angel poured out his vial upon the rivers and fountains of waters; and they became blood. And I heard the angel of the waters say, Thou art righteous, O Lord, which art, and wast, and shalt be, because thou hast judged thus. How many years have we been seeing reports like this It’s really is time to fix it Oh, I know! I know! Because of gross mismanagement by government puppets of the cotton industry! Corruption and political backscratching for big business while our environment is laid to waste!

Overseas doctors not the answer to regional shortfall, GPs sayWith more locally trained Australian doctors than ever before, why can't they go to the regions? I'll say. We need to make time in a rural location as part of new Doctor training and better incentives for Doctors to relocate to these areas so they can train new doctors. The same goes for new teachers This is a big money racket , regional doctors. Believe it or not some even go to NZ to make up shortfalls on weekends or public holidays. The people you trusted found another way to scam to screw YOU and the system !!

Why we should start recognising the loss of a pet as 'real grief'There's often the expectation to keep feelings “in perspective” or to move on and get another one as if pets are interchangeable non-entities we can replace. lilyallsep1 I am a cat. I am also seminal to MsHumoresque’s life. She has little else. I hope I last as long as her for this reason.

Why we should start recognising the loss of a pet as 'real grief'There's often the expectation to keep feelings “in perspective” or to move on and get another one as if pets are interchangeable non-entities we can replace.
