Societies across the world are becoming sleep deprived and our collective behaviour is becoming increasingly unbalanced, a Brisbane sleep researcher is warning.

Dr van Swinderen's sleep research has drilled down into the resting brains of fruit flies, which are the smallest animal with a brain that has been shown to have a selective attention and to need sleep.

Dr van Swinderen said they had also detected brain signatures in the fly that correlated to human sleep states. "You have to keep those changes, but you don't want the system to suddenly use more energy than it's capable of, because there's actually a trillion different connection points in the brain, which is all the synapses, and that has to be maintained within a very narrow range of operation.
