“Subs … have only one big trick. They are stealthy. But if, in a conflict, a sub can be detected, it is dead,” states emeritus professor of complex systems science at the Australian National University Roger Bradbury., he lays out what this means for these immensely complex and costly machines.
“A transparent ocean will be the result of a coming integration of sensing systems not yet developed, and it is likely to come together, when it does, quickly,” he warns. “TheVirginia Class Attack Submarine – SSN. Supplied Source – www.military.comUnfortunately for Australia, Prof Bradbury believes this extinction-level event will happen by 2050. That’s slap-bang in the middle of the scheduled delivery of our biggest, most expensive defence project ever.
One submarine can take out an unsuspecting surface fleet of warships much larger and more powerful than itself. They’re also useful for sneaking about on intelligence gathering, minelaying and special forces missions. The US defence research agency DARPA is also taking a big data approach. It’s attempting to use the behaviour of sea life – such as shrimps and phytoplankton –Underwater gliders. Surface-based automated canoes. They’re cheap and increasingly reliable. All can operate for weeks on end, reporting only when their sensor suite finds something of interest.
We should just develop a virus that will wipe out millions. On second thought, the Chinese Govt beat us to that as well.
How the western countries trash themselves is appallingly rewarding for their enemies. No wonder the West is in permanent declining.
Was this article supported and paid for by CCP China, or once again journalists point of view printed as fact. Media beginning to be our worst enemy.
It is not appropriate to compare weapon counts against China as if they are our enemy. The media slip too easily into conflict mode. Stop the normalisation of war. Where are the articles for peace, reason and diplomacy? Resist or it will avalanche to disaster.
Just saying. Haven’t we learnt from China don’t put all eggs in one basket. Why can’t we have 2 sources? France and USA for submarines
They are an attack weapon + 'the potential to close arterial shipping lanes and strangle economies...' belies the USA's garbage about 'freedom of navigation' + the rules-based order. If ever used as such, they would instantly destroy global trade... like the Suez canal fiasco..💀
Bring jobs back to South Australia you gronks.
You claim AI tech will advance so much subs will become “transparent”. Guess what, sub tech will also advance. What a badly written article.
Who says it will take 20 years? I think you'll find we have subs in service well before then. Leasing or buying existing subs for starters.
Technology goes both ways, location and stealth, if they create better finding tech, they almost certainly will develop better cloaking, the story is a beat up😎
