A steep decline in how NSW students perform compared to their international peers has sent education experts and government ministers looking to Canada for answers.
NSW Education Minister Sarah Mitchell on Wednesday said Canada was a similar jurisdiction, "but they are much better performers than us on every measure in PISA, as well as other testing regimes. It's important that we look at what they're doing".PISA national project manager Sue Thomson said a key difference was Canada had focused on lifting the performance of its disadvantaged students.
"We need to look at how we lift the performance of kids in the lowest socio-economic quartile [in Australia], because they’re the ones really lagging behind," Dr Thomson said. "Their federal government has virtually no role in school education. Each province is finding their own and different way. In Ontario, they have much more well established networks to share effective practice than most parts of Australia," he said.

Why does an industry I've never heard of know so much about me?There are companies buying and selling your information behind the scenes, and you probably won't know until it's leaked. Why have you never heard of this multibillion dollar industry. I thought you worked for a news company. This industry has been common knowledge for years. If it on the internet and it's free, you are the product A very good question. I'd say it's because politicians and legislators don't know how to keep up with the pace of technology. If they had some vision, they'd realise the direction and impact of tech and head it off at the pass. They're not capable of that.
