Australia Day - or Invasion Day - will be marked around the country in dramatically different ways AlwaysWasAlwaysWillBe

Australia Day - or Invasion Day - will be marked around the country on Sunday in dramatically different ways.

"The 26th of January has been commemorated and celebrated, marked in one way or another since the early days of the colony," he told SBS News.READ MORESydneysiders celebrated the date as First Landing Day or Foundation Day with drinking and regattas. In addition, more than 27,000 new Australians will become citizens on Australia Day at ceremonies around the country.Australia's Indigenous people were living on the continent for more than 60,000 years before the arrival of the British."The date has long been a difficult symbol for many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who see it as a day of sorrow and mourning," material from the National Australia Day Council says.

He said the idea of protest reached the mainstream on Australia Day 1988, the country's bicentennial year. In 2017, Melbourne's Darebin and Yarra councils decided to scrap their Australia Day citizenship ceremonies and celebrations. In November, the Inner West Council announced it would be the first in Sydney to"move all celebratory events away from January 26"."For Aboriginal people, the date represents the beginning of colonisation, dispossession, the removal of children and deliberate destruction of language and culture. A growing number of Australians want that to be respectfully acknowledged."

Let’s cancel the public holiday and we all donate the days pay to the indigenous population.its not the governments fault,it’s our forebears for granting the many minorities, the indigenous polulation were treated poorly.Unfortunately I can’t change that.

I understand the 26/1 is called Australia Day.I wish journalists could use facts.

Well the laws of the land state there was no invasion but settlement. So stop fostering what is not the case.

Feel sorry for the aboriginal woman holding up the sign. Very fair for a Aboriginal

Settlement day love 🙄

Controversial for 10 t0 11% of the population, same lot who have to find controversy/complain about everything they don't feel is right, no problem for the majority. If MSM stopped giving airtime, they would go back to being irrelevant

Rubbish.

It's Sunday, that's what I'm celebrating...

'Invasion Day'. I remember a few years ago this was trending news not just on twatter but on msm too. Now, it seems like sbs is snore-worthingly flogging a dead horse. Australia Day is 26th Jan, and it's not 'invasion day', you idiots. The country is at peace with Jan26

Let’s have a day of celebration for our nation that we ALL can celebrate.

Every nation has been invaded in their history, nothing new. I’d be counting my lucky stars the poms got here first otherwise there would be no argument. Wouldn’t matter when the date got changed to, people still wouldn’t be happy cause there’s no money in not playing the victim.

remind me again why we're all forced to finance you to tell us we should be ashamed of ourselves?

There was no inflation it's just delusional political control of others that don't have the same opinion as yourself

Happy Australia day to everyone, love for indigenous people

We have gone through so much as a nation - needless to say the last few months have been testing our resilience. Despite the hardships, we always look forward, move on. Let's look beyond this 1/366 days of the year. To the bright future ahead! AustraliaDay AustraliaDay2020

We don’t celebrate Invasion Day.

A day of mourning InvasionDay

Is SBS fostering multiculturalism or a divisive agenda ?

Make sure go to work tomorrow then.

No one forces you to celebrate . Your indicates that we don't share the land as 1 but rather based on who was here '1st ', how inclusive. An interesting stance that I doubt you would apply to other nations in such as Europe. If it helps think of it as 1st cultural diversity day

We are a blessed country. I respect our indigenous peoples. I respect welcome to country. I thank n respect the Yuggera land I live on. Now let’s move on. We can’t change history but we can make our future great not divisive! Which would you prefer? australiaday2020

99.9% of the population do not call it invasion day, and that includes many aborigines.

alway was always will be Australia Day

Where all Aussies can be proud this Australia DayIf you're unsure about celebrating January 26, this First Nation's festival might be for you. Let's celebrate that we are one people, one nation where everyone is equal before the law. All nations have skeletons in the closet from less enlightened times. Let's celebrate the present and look forward to the future, let us not dwell on the past. Will First Nations people be thanking other Australians for saving them from the Japanese Invasion in 1942? It's just business as usual for 75% of us.
