More than 3,000 people were arrested over the weekend as tens of thousands of protesters took to the streets in Russia to demand Alexei Navalny be released from detention. So who is he? And why is he creating so much attention?

After his return,, with a hearing to review his sentence scheduled for February 2.

His infrastructure of regional offices set up nationwide in 2017 has helped him challenge the Government by mobilising voters. In 2018, Mr Navalny launched a project called Smart Voting that is designed to promote candidates who are most likely to defeat those from the Kremlin's dominant United Russia party.

That's when Mr Putin's current term expires and he is expected to seek re-election, thanks to constitutional reforms last year. "It doesn't matter whether people support Navalny or not, they see these two images and Putin loses," he said. So far, the crackdown has only helped Mr Navalny, according to Alexander Baunov of the Moscow Carnegie Centre.
