Shots were fired when Captain Cook came to land on Australian soil. Was this shield pivotal to that moment? Or does a focus on its origins miss the bigger picture?

Listen"Would it really make any difference to its symbolic significance, which it's acquired over the last 50 and 60 years and in a more intensive way in the last five to 10 years?" she asks.

The British Museum argues, as it does for most items like this in its collection, that the shield tells a story of both Australia and the British. Objects like the spears. Cook and his men took up to 50 spears from the area. At least four survive and are held at a museum in Cambridge. While they want the shield returned, Noeleen and her Land Council deputy chair Ray Ingrey both agree the spears are a more significant symbol of the dispossession of their ancestors' land.

Four of the spears taken from the Gweagal people in 1770, which remain in Cambridge's Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology."The shield is different … it's defensive," Maria says.

He dropped it. They picked it up as a souvenir. Back in Britain, scholars later studied it. The warrior may have well survived a musket ball in the leg. If so, he probably went off and made another shield. But the ABC, AKA the UnABC, reports this as having being 'stolen'.

If it hadn't been conserved in a museum it wouldn't exist. None of the other shields from that time do. Cook should be applauded for saving an artifact.

Are there more of these from the same era? Where can they be viewed?

Huh! Capt. Cook bashing again! In this day and age it’s not acceptable to take indigenous artefacts (or land) but in another time it was...

It wasn't stolen, it was conquered. Wake up ABC, its disgraceful that you have belittled yourself perpetuating the negative idea of INVASION, start promulgating the positive like the liberation of indigenous women from the brutal & abominable violence that permeated their lives
