He'll become the nation’s sixth prime minister in as many years. 🤦

Polling on Australia’s west coast began two hours after the east coast stations opened. East coast stations will close at 6pm, two hours before voting ends in the west.As soon as the polling place doors close, polling officials empty the House of Representatives ballot boxes. They sort the green ballot papers and put all the number ‘1’ votes into separate piles for each candidate. Informal ballot papers are counted separately.

Polling officials are required to complete three main tasks when polls close, according to the Australian Electoral Commission:Conduct a two-candidate-preferred count of the House of Representatives ballot papers, and count the first preferences on the Senate ballot papers.Only ordinary votes from polling places are counted on election night. That is, the ordinary votes that are cast at a polling place where the voter’s name is marked off the electoral roll at the time of voting.

Following the first preference count, polling officials conduct an indicative two-candidate-preferred count — a distribution of ballot papers to two selected candidates. The first results start appearing about 6.10pm AEST. More than 4.7 million votes were cast ahead of election day. The huge numbers of pre-poll votes will mean we won’t know the result in some booths for days.
