The 183-metre chimney was the largest free-standing structure in Scotland and was considered a regional landmark.

Scottish Power lit up the structure and projected the slogan, "Make Coal History" on Wednesday evening ahead of its demolition on Thursday.

Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon pushed the button to detonate the explosives and bring the tower at Longannet power station tumbling down. ''The demolition of the Longannet chimney today marks the definitive end of coal power in Scotland — a transition the rest of the world needs to accelerate for the sake of the planet and future generations,'' Mr Sturgeon wrote on social media.Longannet began generating electricity in 1970 and produced Scotland's last coal-fired energy until its closure in 2016.
