"We're probably not going to have something as extreme as that, this one is a little bit more moderate, but be aware of local impacts," Dr Watkins said. However, the increased rainfall could bring some respite during this summer's bushfire season.
"We can't avoid some fires in any summer now. The La Nina though, with a bit of extra rainfall hopefully will keep those fires a little smaller and a little shorter than what we've seen in recent years," Dr Watkins said.He said that while heatwaves may be less extreme as a result of the La Nina, they may "last for longer be a little more uncomfortable" with higher humidity and slower-moving weather systems.
The Pacific Ocean is 0.8 degrees cooler than normal and is leading to shifting trade winds and pressure patterns. These changes are likely to continue until at least the end of the year. Dr Watkins said the La Nina could also mean more than the usual nine to 11 tropical cyclones, or more severe cyclones, could occur this season.
During the last La Nina, five of the cyclones that occurred were categorised as severe, including Tropical Cyclone Yasi, which caused significant damage in far-north Queensland.Other international agencies, including the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, declared a La Nina event earlier this month. The most important news, analysis and insights delivered to your inbox at the start and end of each day.
