Westpac's response to a parliamentary inquiry into allegations of money laundering is completely "disrespectful to the Australian people" according to Labor Senator Deborah O'Neill Bank executives gave evidence on Friday regarding the money laundering scandal which occurred in 2019. Financial intelligence agency Austrac launched legal action against the bank late last year alleging systemic non-compliance.

It is reported that Westpac has breached anti-money laundering laws on 23 million occasions. Senator DO'Neill said the inquiry wants to know "what is going on with the interaction between auditors and the big bank”. “I’ve got great concerns about cover-up of facts that we need to know,” she said. Ms O’Neill said she is concerned audit firms are “providing staffing into banks and into other major corporate entities” leading to “conflicts of interest”.
