Michelle Rowland has defended the Labor government’s policy to return the national broadband network closer to its original design despite fresh admissions it will not be able to recover $31 billion invested into the project. | hijessicayun

Communications Minister Michelle Rowland has defended the Labor government’s policy to return the national broadband network closer to its original design despite fresh admissions it will not be able to recover $31 billion invested into the project.

“We will keep the NBN in public ownership for the foreseeable future whilst we finish this job of making it a better network.” Rowland took aim at the Coalition government over its decision to use Telstra’s copper network for fibre-to-the-node connections which she said had resulted in cost blowouts and made the NBN less reliable.“The copper network is susceptible to more faults, particularly in times of floods and other disasters – its resilience is really compromised, and that’s certainly a key issue, and it costs more to maintain.

“It really is a virtuous cycle. As you update more people to fibre, you can ensure the fixed wireless network is updated, it also means satellite services becomes a better user experience as well.”

hijessicayun 99.5% of people don't have any use for more bandwidth than what it currently available to them. Those that need extra should pay for it themselves, rather than the government gold-plating the whole network

deniseshrivell hijessicayun Just get all those Jobkeeper companies to return the $20 bill. overpayment.

Chris_Murray48 hijessicayun So Rudd planned for NBN. The Libs decided to go with copper instead of fibre, blow the budget and provide shit internet. Labor now have to upgrade it to fibre NBN as first planned, but some rubes think that’s Labor’s fault?

NBN writes off recovering $31b of government investmentThe government-owned company said it would no longer seek to recover the full $44 billion sunk into the initial build and would only claw back $12.5 billion. Wow- good thing government is now focussed on energy infrastructure …. Does anyone realise/care that's a huge chunk of taxpayer money they're writing off, an amount we all need to work harder (or be luckier) to cover? If the Libs didn't come in and blow out the costs to deliver a sub-par network, then it would've been able to recoup the cost.

Labor ‘wasted two hours attacking’ Scott Morrison: Keith PittNationals MP Keith Pitt says the Labor Party “wasted two hours attacking” former prime minister Scott Morrison amid the motion to censure him in parliament. Mr Pitt says, “to spend that time in the parliament on an attack on an individual I just think was wrong”. “I actually think people won’t like it at all, they’re out there worried about being able to pay their bills and their mortgages and their fuel,” Mr Pitt told Sky News host Andrew Bolt. “And everything else that continues to go up and Anthony Albanese and the Labor Party wants to spend the parliament’s time kicking Scott Morrison.” LNP wasted 9 years … Never a waste of time. Just making sure his place in History is ensured. A waist of fkn time & clearly a political & virtuous vendetta against Morrison/LNP. A (new) low point in Australian political life.

Labor ‘cut all the things that were supporting gas exploration’ in budgetNationals MP Keith Pitt says, “off the back” of Labor’s budget they “cut all the things that were supporting gas exploration”. “They cut the programs for carbon capture and storage for example - a technology which is being used around the world,” Mr Pitt told Sky News host Andrew Bolt. “They’ve sold 600 of these high-pressure pumps for CCS and yet in Australia well it’s just not going to be used by the Labor government.” Mr Pitt said all of those things are bad as “you need more supply to drive down prices”.
