On Monday, Woolworths and Coles announced almost identical initiatives for its stores across Australia. All other IGA stores also followed.IGA said it would be putting on extra staff and giving "absolute priority" to the elderly and disabled an hour before regular opening time, but would not be banning other people from entering during that time.
"We need to stick together at this time. This is teamwork ... we all need to help one another through this." Government concession cards such as a seniors or health care card will need to be shown to enter Woolworths and Coles stores during the one-hour period, but exemptions may be made for carers of vulnerable people or people with medical conditions.
Woolworths suspended home delivery in Victoria, while Coles stopped home delivery across the country other than to vulnerable members of the community.In a televised address on Monday, Woolworths' managing director of supermarkets Claire Peters said the recent short-term spike in sales was greater than the Christmas period, and said there would likely be more restrictions on purchasing.
