The modest town of Mackay didn't really do demonstrations - until Saturday, when hundreds turned out in support of coal.

Who says you can’t teach an old dog new tricks? When mining lobbyist Mick Crowe asks the 250 pro-coal protesters gathered in Mackay's central square whether this is their first ever rally, almost every hand shoots up.

Mick Crowe urges the crowd of pro-coal protesters to win over opponents using logic rather than facts. As director of the Resource Industry Network, an industry-funded lobby group, Mr Crowe's newest job is to lead and amplify a groundswell of support in favour of coal mining. In his telling, this silent local majority has been overshadowed and out-campaigned by loud and powerful blow-ins from down south - the environmentalists determined to stop the Adani Carmichael coal mine.

One Nation leader Pauline Hanson travelled to Clermont to join the pro-Adani protesters, as did mining billionaire Clive Palmer, who has become a sudden electoral force courtesy of an avalanche of paid advertising, strong polling and a preference deal with the Coalition. Former Greens leader Bob Brown led a Stop Adani rally in Mackay on Saturday, next to the pro-coal protest. When the anti-Adani rally starts, some pro-coal protesters heckle with taunts about how the out-of-towners travelled to Mackay .

The billboard features an edited photograph of Labor leader Bill Shorten which makes him appear to hold a "Stop Adani" banner - when in fact the banner was held by a protester, who has been cropped out of the photo. The CoalitionMr Crowe, who is also the managing director of Mackay's G&S Engineering, does not try to engage in partisan politics. He concedes coal will be "absolutely in decline" in 30 or 40 years.

Good shirts from 'MANILA' at the RIGHT price!! 🤪🤪🤪🤪🤪😠😠

and is he in favour of making sure that the coal industry keeps tabs on health checks properly and says it will guarantee that no coal miner will get black lung?

Pro people are the new rebels! Power to the rebels, darkness to the anti-power lemmings.

What more coal mining in the Philippines

Cannot understand the competition around energy. Like it or not we still need coal and oil. Solar wind etc must get better and they will but until they do, the fossil fuels will always be number one.

“Pro-coal activists” are just climate change deniers. If they really cared about long-term jobs, they’d be pushing for a just transition. ausvotes ausvotes2019

Adani has to be stoped, with Adani reputation, Great Barrier Reef is not safe, Liberals should never sign approval to Adani. Adani is going to destroy our golden treasure. Liberals don’t care as longest millions of dollars is paid to Liberals coffers from corrupt Adani. Stop Adan

Hong Kong pro-democracy leaders jailed over mass 2014 protestsA Hong Kong court jails four leaders of the 2014 'Umbrella Movement' nearly five years after activists took to the streets in mass pro-democracy protests. ...and the old men in Beijing cannot see the more they carry out vindictive measures on any pro-democracy movement the stronger it gets. Friends from HK once said to me, the second worst thing in their recent history was the 99 year lease to the British. The worst was when it ended and Britain had to give Hong Kong back to China. It’s a sad day 😢

Anti-Adani convoy and pro-coal activists set to face off in QueenslandHundreds of Adani coal mine supporters are expected to rally in a Queensland mining town as a Bob Brown-led convoy of anti-Adani activists arrives on Saturday. C funded anti-Adani campaign or witch-hunt perhaps. Why else would it create such a resistance when mines are opened all the times. About time they faced those at the coal face. Give the ratbags nothing. No food, water, petrol ,toilet facilities etc. Coal helped produce most of these. Send them packing- Brown first.

Anti-Adani convoy get frosty welcome from Queensland coal mining townThe 400-strong group arrive in Clermont to a frosty welcome from pro-coal locals who wave 'Start Adani' placards and heckle the protesters as they drive into town. So the convoy figured out how to travel back in time to the Cretaceous? Interesting. Of course jobs are more important than the future of mankind That is very very understandable. Politicians and Unions must work out transition plan from coal mining but all we hear 'its not my job', its their fault and so on.
