Environmental activists plan to block major intersections, march nude and use bikes to disrupt traffic during a week of protests throughout Melbourne's CBD as part of the global Extinction Rebellion movement.
Police north-west metropolitan region Commander Tim Hansen said crowd behaviour would be closely monitored. Commander Hansen told radio station 3AW that police were concerned the Extinction Rebellion movement had been infiltrated by fringe groups.Protesters describe the Spring Rebellion campaign as non-violent but highly disruptive. Melbourne activists are planning daily road blockades, a nude march and a disruptive bike ride.
‘‘Everyone has a right to protest peacefully without impacting the rest of the community, who also have the right to go about their daily business,’’ he said.Credit:program on Sunday at "angry" protesters who were imposing their will on the public. He said proof that this sort of action worked came with the British government's response to Extinction Rebellion’s 11-day occupation of sites across London in April – the government met a key demand of protesters by declaring a climate and environmental emergency.
Organisers of that action hope Extinction Rebellion generates momentum towards their own protest. A "dress rehearsal" for the conference protest will be held this Friday, outside BHP offices in Collins Street.
Ridiculous- protesters always have a choice - but they must not be tolerated when bringing a significant city into disruption. Clean them out and sail them into the southern Pacific for cooling off.
Of course they have a choice.
Rumors have it that there will be a feast at the end of the protest. It’s babies. EatTheBabies AOC
FoEAustralia Sail on!
Don't these people realise they will not be seen in a good and positive light if they use disruptive tactics ? Obviously not educated enough to use speech to fight their battles, use stupid stunts instead. Idiots.
So anyone stuck in their car in traffic by these arseholes should just sit there revving their engines creating more emissions & they may then find an alternate choice.
I was planning to come into the CBD this week but I don't want to get caught up in all this (especially with the randomness of when/where they'll be turning up) so I'll be taking my money elsewhere. Sorry city traders 😞 cityofmelbourne Melbourne
Bring out the fire trucks with blue tinted water!
Protesters that disrupt a city do nothing for their cause. All that is achieved is pissing off thousands of people.
Very chilly and wet in Melbourne for the whole week although it’s spring they better get dressed in their winter clothes
Time for the city to invest in some water cannons
FoEAustralia Yes PLEASE. 🙏🏻
If they block public transport, then they are completely self-defeating in their efforts to mitigate climate change.
If you believe the narrative that humans are warming the planets climate, these are literally your spokespeople. How does it feel to be part of a brainwashed cult? climatescam climatecult brainwashedidiots Agenda2030 Agenda21
Any idea when the worlds coming to an end?......... I'm teeing off at 9.20am tommorrow.
How much longer to the citizens of Melbourne have to put up with this constant disruption to their daily lives so these indoctrinated knuckle-draggers can live a fantasy that what they're doing is anything other than a load of contrived socialist nonsense?
Pray for acid rain...
All because of those dern e-phones. Stupid youngsters. 😡 😡
Fire hose ....
Sigh
Whats a Climate Emergency ? They would not have a f..king clue. ☺️
Start by confiscating the vessel... They cant protest if they are in jail or its contempt of court if they return to the scene of the protest
