The last time consumers were this pessimistic about the economy, the Soviet Union had just collapsed, acid-wash jeans were in, and Shane Warne was making his Test debut. Needless to say, things are grim.revealed a 7.6 per cent plunge in the closely watched statistics, clocking in at the lowest level for January since 1992, a month when shoppers are usually buoyed post-Christmas and looking forward to the year ahead. Now high streets and malls are eerily quiet.

“Right now it’s a sort of pseudo lockdown scenario that we’re in, where there isn’t an official lockdown, but there’s no question the majority of the public are being a little bit more cautious.”While businesses have become used to dealing with new challenges throughout the past three years of the pandemic, the recent Omicron outbreak has introduced unprecedented disruption through almost every facet of the retail ecosystem.

“Team member absenteeism associated with the COVID-19 Omicron variant has placed additional pressure on distribution centres and stores in some states, necessitating a reduction of trading hours in some stores and impacting supply chain productivity and stock availability,” Wesfarmers said earlier this week. For many, desperate times have started to call for equally desperate measures.

Foot traffic and visits to retailers in large shopping malls are down because people are terrified of catching the virus. “The biggest shopping centres are being hit hardest. People are tending to go to smaller centres because they feel safer there,” he says.

domp simonjohanson Our government has led us down a sink hole in the current COVID phase ?

domp simonjohanson Needless yo say. Things can only get better. A great spot to be in

domp simonjohanson Unless you’re selling a house

domp simonjohanson Isn't this the complete opposite to your article about Frydenberg saying ppl are spending up big?

domp simonjohanson And yet the media constantly criticise MarkMcGowanMP for pointing to this & the sad loss of life in his reasons for delaying opening WA.

domp simonjohanson Hey isn't 'living with covid' grand huh? Shit yeah. We're all too bloody scared to leave our homes as covid races through the countryside like Ghengis Khan and his hordes of mongols.

domp simonjohanson So now the Age has nothing to spin and bias Vic gov, now it starts blaming customers not going out and spend.

domp simonjohanson Go out and do anti lockdown protest? Oh wait…the gov didn’t lockdown.

domp simonjohanson Can't blame people for wanting to protect themselves and their families by minimising contact with others when there is a deadly virus in the community. This all falls at the feet of the federal government and their lackadaisical approach to curtailing COVID. ScottytheFailure

domp simonjohanson Do you mean WA is going to independent? My family will join them if they do.

Covid news live: Africa sees cases ‘drop significantly’; experts say Australia’s Omicron wave ‘likely’ peakedScientists say Australia’s hardest-hit states are ‘probably through the worst’ as cases are ‘levelling off’; Covid cases have sharply declined in Africa for the first time since discovery of Omicron So who wants to guess when Domicron will again push to drop masks? I don't see how Au epidemiologists can say NSW & VIC have 'probably' hit the peak when we don't have access to enough RATs for everyone who needs one to test & report. The data skewed - how can it be used to predict anything?
