Australia will not shorten the isolation period for asymptomatic household contacts of a COVID-19 case from seven to five days, as politicians respond more cautiously to the Omicron wave that Prime Minister Scott Morrison said had surprised him.
Speaking in Canberra after national cabinet met on Thursday, Chief Medical Officer Professor Paul Kelly said the Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation had discussed whether to make a third dose of a COVID-19 vaccine part of the primary course of immunisation at its meeting on Wednesday, but was yet to make a decision.
“It’s a balance that you’re constantly adjusting,” he said. “The pandemic continues to give us surprises and Omicron has been one of the biggest.”Professor Kelly said hospitals and food supply chain systems were beginning to see improvements in staffing levels after last week’s change to isolation rules for essential workers.
“We are seeing a lot of cases,” Professor Kelly said. “I continue to stand by the fact that this is a much less severe type of the virus than previous waves. When you get such high case loads, you have, unfortunately, some people that are experiencing severe disease.
