Less than three months after they were introduced, level two water restrictions will be rolled back after huge amounts of rain for Greater Sydney.

Level two water restrictions were brought into place in December, the first time since the Millennium drought. There will be a two-week delay to ensure water quality due to concerns around potential contamination from bushfires and the heavy rain flowing into dams.

“We recently experienced the biggest rain event in 20 years which has impacted the quality of water in the Greater Sydney catchment,” NSW Minister for Water Melinda Pavey said on Tuesday. The heavy rains brought flooding to some areas but have helped ease water restrictions. Picture: Jenny Evans/Getty ImagesSydney’s main water source, Warragamba Dam, has had 742 megalitres of water flow into the dam since last month, enough to supply water for more than two years on current averages. While level two water restrictions prevent using a sprinkler or hose under most circumstances, level one has more leniency.

Fitting a hose with a trigger nozzle allows you to use it to clean your car or house, but you can leave the sprinkler in the shed. Fines still apply for breaching water restrictions. Residential breaches will cost you $220, for businesses it’s $550.
