“The situation in Afghanistan remains extremely dangerous, extremely complex,” he admitted while speaking at a press conference on Thursday.

He confirmed the United Kingdom and United States played a key role in the flight which carried 74 Australian visa holders to safety on Wednesday night. Viral videos emerged on social media showing hundreds of desperate Afghans running alongside jets and attempting to push their way onto planes to flee the Taliban-ruled country.

Ms Payne also confirmed a DFAT facilitated flight touched down in Darwin with 186 passengers on board while a second with 172 passengers arrived Thursday morning.
