Almost 1.2 million people were underemployed in Australia last year and the problem is only predicted to get worse, new research shows.

According to Jeff Borland, a professor of economics at the University of Melbourne, there has been a significant shift to part-time work over decades, which is causing the spike in underemployment."Back in the mid-1960s, for example, only about 10 per cent of jobs were part-time then and the rate of underemployment was 1 per cent."Nowadays with part-time employment, it's about a third of the labour force.

Professor Borland predicts underemployment is likely to get worse, particularly after hits to the economy from this summer's bushfire and the coronavirus outbreak."The signs are that part-time employment will continue to grow," he said. "If you extrapolate past trends and taking account of the likelihood of some weakening in the Australian economy, it is quite likely that underemployment will continue to rise."

For airport worker Desiree Sheets-Chavolla, underemployment is a worrying trend that makes her worry about the future for her children."We want to make it better in the future.

There’s work out there but people are to choosy🤨you do anything even if it’s garbage sorting 😟and while you’re bringing money in you keep looking for a better job😧

A bit fuzzy, are any these underemployed Australians also receiving unemployment benefit? I am guessing that 720,000 of them are because the unemployed are of course underemployed and as such are now going to be scrutinised in a 'Robodebt' operation because of undeclared earnings

This is widespread? I knew it was bad, I can't even gat a job at macca's, but this many people are in the same boat?

We need full employment. For every job opening at an unemployment centre there are 18 applications. The government needs to create new jobs through public spending and nationalisation to stop these businesses from profiting and keeping wages low from unemployment
