Two workers killed in the Wallan train derailment north of Melbourne last week have been praised by their families as having a passion for their work.

With the lead locomotive now removed from the tracks at the scene of last week's train derailment north of Melbourne, the deceased train driver has been praised as a man with a heart of gold.

The crash happened about 1.5 kilometres north of Wallan station, near a point where one track diverges into two. The lead locomotive was removed from the tracks on Tuesday and was loaded on a specialised flatbed truck to be transported back to Sydney along with two other carriages.
