The WA Treasurer and deputy Labor leader tells federal Labor colleagues to take a step back from attacks on Gladys Liu.

"I think everybody, including around the issues that Gladys Liu has been facing, needs to take a breath, perhaps take a step back and have a measured, sophisticated, sensible think around our relationship with China and how we articulate that in the public space."

Asked if his Labor federal colleagues were appropriately handling the debate, Mr Wyatt indicated they should tone down their comments. "I think every federal MP needs to be very careful in the rhetoric they make in our relationship with China," he said. "I think … my federal [WA] Labor colleagues have been very good around this debate because they understand our trading relationship with China is fundamental to the success of our state, fundamental to the job creation that we see on a daily basis.

"I think our east coast colleagues, perhaps, could pay some attention to what my [federal] Labor colleagues have been saying."Last week, the ABC revealed Chinese Government records indicating Ms Liu, the Liberal member for the marginal NSW seat of Chisolm, was a member of two provincial chapters of the China Overseas Exchange Association between 2003 and 2015.

Wouldn't it be great if we had an independent commision that could sift through the information and make a judgement. Avoiding all this hot air.

Never let doing what is right and principled get in the way of making money.
